Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser

Qatar's Ambassador to the United Nations, Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser has been elected the new yearly President of the UN General Assembly.

The 192-member body voted by acclamation or consensus on Wednesday in New York to elect the 58-year old diplomat, whose one year term begins in September when the 66th General Assembly opens at UN headquarters.

Al-Nasser, who is fluent in Arabic and English, is a career diplomat, who has held several positions with the Qatari government.

"The theme that I am proposing for the high-level debate at the opening of the 66th session, which is the role of mediation in the settlement of disputes by peaceful means. I believe that selection of this theme will enrich debate and deepen cooperation on this important issue, which lies at the heart of the work of the United Nations."

Mr. Al-Nasser will take over from outgoing GA President, Joseph Deiss of Switzerland.
