• This week north and South Sudan signed an agreement to pull their forces out of the disputed oil-rich Abyei region. The accord comes as Southern Sudan prepares to become independent on 9 July. Despite this accord the thorny issues of the status of Abyei and the conflict in Southern  Kordofan state remain a serious concern.

Five-year push to provide “Sanitation for All”

• A five year programme to ensure that people across the world have access to proper toilets has been launched at the UN. It's estimated that 2.6 billion people don't have proper sanitation. Therese Dooley a UNICEF's hygiene and sanitation expert says the lack of toilets can often lead to diarrhoea which causes the death of around 3,000 children a day

Ugandan authorities need to do more to fight HIV and AIDS

• The number of people living with HIV is increasing in Uganda, according to Nabbumba "Princess" Nuru a young Ugandan HIV/AIDS activist. Ms. Nuru points out that 30,000 babies are born with HIV each year. She says the government is not allocating enough resources to tackle the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
