Mozambique urged to stop deporting asylum-seekers

Exhausted Ethiopians rest under a tree in Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province after walking from the coast on their way south earlier this year.

The Mozambique authorities are being urged to stop deporting asylum-seekers after 93 people were sent to Tanzania Tuesday.

The group, from Somalia and Ethiopia, had arrived by boat and included four children, and three elderly men.

Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, UNHCR Melisa Fleming says they worked with police in Mozambique to help the asylum-seekers, only to find out later they had been deported.

"We're also very concerned about the abuse by police of people inside the country who haven't been deported but are seeking asylum and are stripped of their belongings their clothes mobile phones confiscated and in some cases even their shoes are taken from them."
