Libya "greatest challenge" for Gabon during Security Council Presidency

Libya was one of the "greatest challenges" for Gabonese Ambassador, Noel Nelson Messone, as President of the United Nations Security Council this month.

Mr. Messone had organized an informal meeting with the African Union and Security Council hoping for a consensus on how to deal with Libya.

"We wanted the meeting between the high level panel of the AU and the Security Council to be sanctioned by an outcome; that was very difficult because the meeting was not scheduled as such. But we felt that it would have been important. In the end the members could not agree on an outcome and on the language of that particular outcome."

Gabon also helped pass a resolution on HIV/AIDS and conflict, says Messone. Another achievement, he adds, is the re-election of the Secretary-General.
