People across the world will benefit if oceans are properly managed.

That's the message being highlighted on World Oceans Day, observed on 8 June.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warns that oceans face a variety of threats linked to the over-exploitation of resources and climate change.

Jacqueline Alder is the head of the Marine, Coastal and Freshwater Ecosystem Branch at UNEP.

"Today we would like to highlight that if we manage the marine eco-systems really well, we can make a significant contribution to helping human communities prosper. For example, much of the protein that people eat in the coast is based on marine resources. In fact, most people don't know this, but 70 per cent of the air we breathe originates in oceans."
