An arrest warrant has been issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the Libyan leader Muammar Qadhafi.

The UN-backed court in The Hague is accusing Mr Qadhafi of crimes against humanity, allegedly committed in February.

It follows a popular uprising against the Libyan leader by pro-democracy activists who want to remove him from power.

Mr Qadhafi's son Saif Al-Islam and intelligence chief, Abdullah Al-Senussi, have also been indicted.

Fadi El Abdallah, is a spokesperson for the ICC.

"The judges considered it was necessary to arrest these three persons in order to ensure that they will appear before the court, to ensure they will not put in danger the proceedings or investigations and to ensure they will not continue committing crimes that fall under the jurisdiction of the court."

Thousands of people are thought to have been killed in the ongoing conflict in the north African country.
