Gaza blockade needs to be lifted to boost growth

Gaza

Serious sustainable, economic and employment growth won't happen in Gaza until the blockade is lifted, according to a report released by the International Labour Organization.

It says 80% of the population in Gaza is forced to survive on humanitarian aid because of the blockade imposed by Israel.

In Gaza, the report says youth unemployment is a "staggering" 39%.

Kari Tapiola is the ILO Director-General's Special Adviser who led the mission.

"A number of physical restrictions to movement in the West Bank have been removed, but a lot remains. Of course the conclusion that you cannot avoid is that the blockade needs to be removed for any serious sustainable, economic and employment growth".
