Donors have been urged by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) to fund a global immunization effort to save millions of children's lives by 2015.

The call has come as world leaders prepare to converge in London for a pledging conference of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization known as the GAVI Alliance.

Derrick Mbatha reports.

The UN's children's fund says vaccine programmes should target the hardest to reach children who currently miss out on simple life-saving vaccines.

It says one in five children around the world is currently not vaccinated.

UNICEF points out that one-third of children die from pneumonia and diarrhoea yet new vaccines against some causes of these deadly diseases now exist.

It's aiming to save an additional four million children's lives by 2015.
