The 2,000 extra peacekeepers sent to Côte d’Ivoire in the wake of last November's post electoral violence will remain until 31 July.

The Security Council has agreed to retain the troops in the country, as well as three armed helicopters borrowed from the UN mission in neighbouring Liberia.

The troops were redeployed from Liberia to reinforce the nearly 9,000-strong UN operation in Côte d’Ivoire (ONUCI).

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says he recommended this extension because of the "extremely fragile" situation.

Ban also warned that "the risk of renewed conflict was high".
