Ban calls for investigations into Syria killings

Ban Ki-moon

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is calling for independent investigations into the deaths of over 70 people in Syria.

The number of casualties since mid-March has peaked at 1,000 following the government crackdown against protestors calling for reform.

Many more protestors have been injured and thousands arrested.

Mr Ban says he is "deeply troubled" by reports of children dying under torture, or from live ammunition and shelling.

His Special Representative on Violence against Children, Marta Santos Pais, has also urged the Syrian government to ensure the protection of all children amid the ongoing unrest.
