A quarter of a million Palestinian children are participating in the fifth annual Gaza Summer Games which kick off on Wednesday with an Olympic style torch relay-race through the Gaza Strip.

This is the fifth year that the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is organizing the games which include a broad range of sporting, recreational, cultural and educational activities.

The agency says that the games help to develop children's talents, give them room for self-expression and teach them to respect one another.

Filippo Grandi is UNRWA Commissioner-General.

"This is a great occasion that is provided to 250,000 children to have fun and to have a moment of normality together with their friends in a situation which, unfortunately continues not to be normal, and that will remain in the memories of these children for all their lives."
