Actress and Goodwill Ambassador Angelina Jolie has been visiting people fleeing North Africa and Syria as part of her commitment to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR). Hundreds of thousands of people have fled both countries as violence between government forces and those demanding change, mounts.

3.6 million lives can be saved by increasing midwifery services

Up to 3.6 million lives can be saved during childbirth if midwifery services are more accessible, according to a new UN report. State of the World's Midwifery 2011 says there is a significant gap between the number of midwives practicing and those needed. The majority of women or their newborn babies die from inadequate or insufficient health care services. Vincent Faveau, UN Population Fund's senior maternal health advisor spoke to Jocelyne Sambira about Ghana, a country that is beating maternal deaths by investing in midwifery.

Reducing the rates of breast cancer and other noncommunicable diseases

Breast Cancer Welfare Association of Malaysia1.3 million women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year and 400,000 of them will die. Many of those deaths are preventable through early detection and treatment. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it is the top cancer in women both in the developed and the developing world. At a UN Conference in New York on the prevention and control of noncommunicable diseases health professionals are pushing for measures to cut the rate of breast cancer. Julie Walker spoke with one attendee, Ranjit Kaur, the head of the Breast Cancer Welfare Association of Malaysia and a survivor.
