The migrants on the overcrowded vessel who were mainly from Sub-Saharan Africa were reportedly trying to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa when the accident occurred.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says that the Tunisian coast guard was able to rescue over 500 migrants from the sinking vessel.
