The recent drowning of migrants from Libya off the coast of Tunisia is being described as one of the deadliest incidents in the Mediterranean this year.

The UN's Refugee Agency says 150 people have drowned and scores of others are missing after their boat capsized off the Tunisian coast on Wednesday.

Many women and children are among the 150 bodies recovered so far.

Jumbe Omari Jumbe of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) says the boat was carrying around 850 people.

"IOM has started screening the first group of 193 migrants mostly from Sub-Saharan Africa rescued on Wednesday by Tunisian navy and local fishermen after the overcrowded boat they were in run aground near a sandbank near Kerkennah islands.”
