115 million widows living in extreme poverty
At least 115 million widows are living in extreme poverty according to figures released to mark the first International Widows Day.
The day calls attention to the challenges women face when their husbands die including loss of income and in some cultures social rejection.
Michelle Bachelet, the Executive Director of UN Women is calling for better social protection programmes.
"Attention to the worlds widows is long overdue. The first international widows day is a vital first step in promoting the protection and respect for the rights across all regions and cultures.”
