Addressing students at Sofia University he told them that this October the world population will hit 7 billion, and by 2050 it will be more than 9 billion.

He said how the world will look in 20 years will depend largely on what is done in 2011.

The Secretary-General urged young people to engage with what he described as the three overarching challenges that will shape the future.

“First, a more prosperous world, free of extreme poverty. Second, a cleaner, greener and more sustainable world. And third a safer world free of nuclear threat. Realizing these goals will not be easy. It means investing when the dividends may not be immediate.”
