US renews call to Syria to allow fact finding mission into the country

Human Rights Council

The Syrian government is being urged to allow a fact finding mission to enter the country.

The call was made at the opening of the Human Rights Council in Geneva on Monday.

Authorities in Syria are said be using excessive use of force against anti government protestors and opposition groups.

US Ambassador Eileen Donahue insists on the urgency of sending a mission to the country to carry out an objective and independent investigation.

“We note however, whereas the commission of inquiry has been afforded access to Libya, the Syrian regime’s refusal to afford similar access is intolerable. We call on the all members of the Council to insist that the Council mandated fact finding mission be allowed to carry out its work.

Ambassador Donahue also reiterated the Council's calls to the Syrian government to stop killing, imprisoning and torturing demonstrators.
