Sha Zhukang was speaking at the start of a two-week session of the UN Commission on Sustainable Development in New York.

“Transport is vitally important to development. We must ensure access to affordable transport, especially to the rural poor, expand the public and non-motorized transport in the cities and transform transport systems to address climate change, local pollution, energy security and safety.”

In addition to transport, the Commission is looking at sound management of chemicals and waste management as well as mining to benefit local people.

The Commission is also discussing the need to change production and consumption patterns in order to address challenges of climate change, environmental degradation and the scarcity of resources such as water.
