Transition in DR Congo to come sooner or later

Sooner or later the United Nations will have to look into concluding its mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo or DRC, according to Ambassador Gerard Araud of France.

Outlining some of the issues that the Security Council will deal with this month under the presidency of France, he said a meeting on the DRC is planned for 18 May.

“Sooner or later the question will be about the transition. We are not going to stay indefinitely in DRC, but if we want to leave in an orderly manner we have to engage in real dialogue with the DRC authorities so they tell us what they need, in a sense to be able to restore their sovereignty on all the territory of the DRC.”

The UN mission in the DRC initially known as MONUC was established in 1999 to monitor the peace process after what was known as Africa’s World war which involved eight countries and several armed groups.

It was renamed the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) in July 2010.
