Tension in the oil-rich Abyei region, which is contested by north and south Sudan, is causing concern at the United Nations.

The UN Secretary-General has called on the Leaders of the National Congress Party (NCP) and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), not to make any unilateral declarations regarding the ownership of the region.

Julia Paul reports.

The Abyei region of Sudan has been a flashpoint since South Sudan decided in a referendum in January to become an independent country.

A referendum for the people of Abyei to vote on whether to stay with the North or to be part of the South remains unresolved.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says that the military standoff on Abyei is unacceptable and he deplores that the persistent deadlock has led to further loss of life.

He has called on the leadership of the National Congress Party (NCP) and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) not to provoke each other or engage in military confrontation in Abyei, as this would result in further loss of life and affect the future relationship between the North and South.
