Secretary-General supports Palestinian unity

All Palestinian parties should commit to the principles of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The call has come from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, as leaders from the two main Palestinian political groups, Fatah and Hamas, signed a unity agreement in the Egyptian capital Cairo.

Fatah currently controls part of the West Bank while Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip in 2007. There have been tensions between the two parties in the past four years.

Martin Nesirky is a UN spokesman.

“The Secretary-General has continually supported efforts for unity and the work of Egypt and President Mahmoud Abbas in this regard. He wishes to see unity in the framework of the positions of the Quartet and the commitments of the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Arab Peace Initiative. The Secretary-General therefore strongly appeals to all Palestinian parties to commit to these principles.”
