May 5 is the International Day of the Midwife and the United Nations Population Fund is highlighting the crucial role of midwives.

Anne Wittenberg from the UN Population Fund says unsupervised childbirth can be very dangerous for women:

“Every day around one thousand women die while giving birth, most of them in developing countries. Most complications and deaths could be easily prevented by a midwife with the right skills, the right equipment, and the right support. But there’s a shortage of some 350,000 midwives around the world.”

In June the UN Population Fund is producing the first ever report into the state of midwifery services.
