Road safety decade of action aims to save millions of lives

A decade of action on road safety could save millions of lives, according to the UN Secretary-General, Ban-ki Moon.

Road safety

Road accidents kill 1.3 million people every year. The decade for action, launched on Wednesday, aims to improve roads, and develop driving skills and vehicle safety.

In the Philippines, campaigners are working to reduce road deaths 50 per cent.

May Altarejos-Cueva, from Project Community Activities Reaching Everyone Through Services, (C.A.R.E.S) lost her brother in a road accident ten years ago.

She says the high number of deaths are due to drivers, and the state of the roads.

“In our country the public works and highways are given a budget but they are not using the right materials, so we almost have bad roads. But we always have to take into consideration three conditions – the driver, the vehicle and the roads.”
