There are now an estimated 4.6 billion subscriptions to cellphones globally, and concerns have been raised about their impact on health.

So far the risks identified relate mainly to traffic accidents, which can be caused by drivers using mobile phones.

But there are ongoing studies to assess the potential long-term health effects of cellphones use.

Elena Vapnitchnaia discussed this issue with Dr. Kurt Straif from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a specialized agency of the World Health Organization:
