New recommendations call for accountability to save lives

New recommendations have been unveiled by a body set up by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to help monitor assistance given to saving lives in developing countries.

President Jakaya Kikwete

The recommendations were announced in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, by the UN Commission on Information and Accountability for Women’s and Children’s Health.

Derrick Mbatha reports.

The UN Commission on Information and Accountability for Women’s and Children’s Health is co-chaired by President Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

It has advised monitoring progress based on specific indicators, such as the number of women who have access to skilled care during childbirth and the number of children treated for pneumonia.

The new recommendations are aimed at helping countries develop better ways of gathering health data to improve understanding of health needs and where resources should be focused.

Under the recommendations, there will be a coordinated system for tracking health spending on women and children.
