Need for framework to balance risks and benefits of nuclear technology

The tragedy at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was damaged by an earthquake and tsunami on March 11, has raised disturbing questions and fuelled public fears.

That’s what United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told a meeting in Geneva, which is looking at improving how countries deal with nuclear accidents.

Mr. Ban said that while nuclear technology had enormous potential to improve lives and promote sustainable economic development, there was a need to balance its benefits with risk-management strategies.

“Men and women around the world are asking: Are we really doing all we can to safeguard the world’s people in the case of nuclear accidents? Recent events suggest that there are large gaps in how societies and the international system think and act about breaches to nuclear safety.”
