Natural environment under unprecedented stress

The natural environment is under unprecedented stress with the world's excessive use and consumption patterns no longer sustainable.

That’s what United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told government ministers, at the end of the two-week session of the Commission on Sustainable Development in New York.

Mr. Ban said that the Commission had been an opportunity to agree on actions to reverse these trends.

“Over the course of the past two years, the Commission has focused on transport, chemicals, waste, mining and sustainable consumption and production. We have emphasized these issues because our natural environment is under unprecedented stress with far reaching social and economic implications. Our excessive use and consumption and production patterns are no longer sustainable.
