Murder of Peruvian radio journalist condemned by UNESCO

Authorities in Peru have been urged by the head of UNESCO, Irina Bokova to investigate the murder of radio journalist Julio Castillo Narváez.

The journalist was reportedly shot by unidentified gunmen while having lunch at a local restaurant in the city of Viru on 3 May – World Press Freedom Day.

Ms. Bokova has condemned the murder, describing it as an attack on the basic human right of journalists and citizens to speak their mind and debate issues that concern them.

According to by the Committee to Protect Journalists, Castillo, who was known for his criticism of local authorities, had received repeated death threats.
