That’s what United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told a gathering on Democracy and Gender Equality in New York.

He said that women are playing a leading role in the movements for change in countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Tunisia and Egypt.

“Certainly there has been important progress. More women in more countries are taking their places in parliament. Fewer than 30 countries have reached the target of 30 per cent women in national parliaments.”
