More women are needed in science and technology

Asha-Rose Migiro

Women continue to be under-represented in the sciences.

That's what United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro said at the International Women Leaders' Conference taking place in the Israeli city of Haifa.

The conference organized by the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is looking at the role of women in science and technology.

Ms. Migiro says the traditional stereotype of associating maths and sciences with men can discourage girls and women from entering those fields.

It promotes what she calls "occupational segregation" which she says is a grave injustice.

The UN Deputy Chief is a strong advocate for women's empowerment and the advancement of gender equality.

She also travelled to Jerusalem where she met with President Shimon Peres and other senior Israeli officials.
