More action needed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Governments are being urged to make progress in agreeing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions before the climate change conference scheduled to take place in Durban, South Africa in December.

Christiana Figueres

The call has come from the head of the United Nations climate change agency, Christiana Figueres.

She told reporters in New York that while governments continue to negotiate about cutting their greenhouse gas emissions she already sees two encouraging trends.

“First countries, including the biggest economies are moving forward with new policies that promote low carbon growth even if they don’t always have a climate label attached to those policies. And secondly, the private sector continues to increase its investment in low carbon business and renewable energy and want to do more. So in Durban governments need to take further steps to drive both of those important trends forward and faster.”
