The city of Misrata in Libya is facing a critical and desperate health situation with shortages of medical supplies and personnel, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The agency says although fighting has decreased over the last week it is still not possible to get a clearer picture of the casualties because of a lack of medical records.

However, WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic says the agency's team has been able to glean information from six operating hospitals.

"On average there were 12 deaths and 70 injuries occurring per day during the fighting and these numbers are going gown in the last week. Regarding shortages and needs, there is a shortage of specialized nursing staff, most notably in operating theatres, intensive care units, midwives and nurses specializing in dialysis.”
