Focussing on vaccinations for the next decade will help achieve the millennium development goal to reduce child mortality, says the United Nations' top health expert says.

The 64th WHA, which is the decision-making body of the World Health Organisation (WHO), ends today.

Among the issues discussed by world health experts was the important of immunisation programmes – recognized by the Decade of Vaccinations, which starts this year.

Dr Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, told delegates that focusing on vaccinations and primary health care will save children's lives:

"We heard first hand accounts of what the new Meningitis vaccine means for Africa. Many countries have also added Yellow Fever and Hepititus B vaccines to routine immunization programmes. I hardly need to remind you of what these efforts contribute to the attainment of MGD 4."
