First Gaza marathon raises a million dollars for children's Summer Games

Hundreds of people, including 1300 children, braved searing temperatures in the Gaza strip to take part in the first marathon organised by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.

The marathon raised a million dollars for the annual Summer Games, which, every year, provide a quarter of a million children in Gaza with recreational and education activities over the summer months.

It was won by the Palestinian athlete Nader el Masri, who completed the course in two hours, 42 minutes and 47 seconds.

Chris Gunness from UNWRA, says there was no disruption to the event, despite recent violence in the region. He says the marathon was an extraordinary achievement.

“I think it says to the outside world, this is the true spirit of the Palestinians. You know, far too often people around the world associate Palestinians with things that are not good, but here we saw the sheer dignity of these people. We saw, you know, women, children, everywhere you went in Gaza. You know, the race went through a very crowded fish market at one point and the fishermen stopped, and they were clapping, and you know they’d been out fishing all night – I mean this was a society coming to life, coming together as one community.”
