Eight senior Libyan army generals defect

Eight generals from the Libyan army have defected and are appealing to other army officers to join them.

The Libyan generals are also calling for the atrocities against civilians to stop. So far, over a hundred officers are said to have left the country.

Government forces loyal to Muammar Qadafhi have been pitted against opposition forces since anti-government riots took place in mid-February.

Speaking to the Security Council on Tuesday, Lynn Pascoe, the Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, says the rebels now control the eastern port city of Misrata.

"Defections from the regime seem to again be on the rise, including the eight generals from the Libyan military who are now in Italy along with many of their officers. They have appealed to others in the military to join them and stop the atrocities being committed against their people. Opposition forces have gained control of Misrata and reportedly pushed government troops westwards. But there continues to be fighting in the outskirts of Misrata and the city is only accessible by sea."
