The human rights branch of the UN Mission in the country (UNOCI) has found what is described as “difficult conditions” in some centres.

UNOCI has raised its concerns with the Minister of Justice in Côte d’Ivoire, Jeannot Ahoussou-Kouadio.

Rupert Colville, spokesman from the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said five centres had been visited:

“Difficult conditions of detention were observed during a visit this week to Bouna, where seven individuals, including Mr Gbagbo’s son, and the President of the former ruling party, are being detained. Security was extremely lax in the detention centre, with the result that FRCI elements had been able to enter the facility and threaten the detainees.”
