Cities are the biggest polluters of our time
The world’s towns and cities are the biggest polluters of our time, according to a new report by the UN’s Human Settlement Programme or UN-HABITAT.
They account for 70% of greenhouse gas emissions and yet they only occupy 2% of the Earth’s surface.
Still, cities have an important role to play in curbing emissions, a role that most governments underestimate.
Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN HABITAT, Dr. Joan Clos, spoke to Jocelyne Sambira about the main findings of the report and how it can be used as a starting point for cities that want to go green.
