Nuclear scientists from 21 member states of the United Nations are to carry out a 2 year study into the effects of the radiation released at Fukushima.

The Japanese nuclear power plant was damaged in March when it was hit by an earthquake and tsunami.

The UN Scientific Committee on the effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR), expects to have preliminary findings in May of next year.

Michael Crick, the secretary of UNSCEAR, told Anne Thomas that the committee has also been monitoring the effects of what happened following the nuclear accident at Chernobyl in the Ukraine 25 years ago.
