Call for world’s cities to reduce energy consumption

The world's towns and cities need to think about reducing pollution when planning future development, according to a new report launched on Thursday by the UN's Human Settlement Programme or UN-HABITAT.

Cities account for 70% of greenhouse gas emissions and yet they only occupy 2% of Earth’s surface.

But Dr. Joan Clos, the Under-Secretary General and Executive Director of UN HABITAT, says redesigning cities can reduce energy consumption, and help reduce emissions:

“We have a need to change our energy consumption pattern. With energy based on the carbon, we cannot sustain the viability of our planet, taking in account the future projection of economical growth of the population.”
