The Sudanese town of Abyei is virtually empty following a rampage of looting and burning two days ago.

According to reports, more than 40,000 people have been displaced by the violence and many of them have sought refugee in Agok to the south of the town.

The Sudan Armed Forces are responsible for maintaining law and order in the town and the UN mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has urged them to carry out this responsibility.

Derrick Mbatha discussed the situation in Abyei with UNMIS spokesman Kouider Zerrouk who is at the mission's compound Abyei.
