The Sudan Armed Forces have taken control of Abyei town, according the United Nations Mission in Sudan.

Residents fled as the violence flared. The town in southern Sudan has been damaged by fire and looted.

There have also been skirmishes between the Sudan Armed forces and the southern Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA) in the region.

There are reports that 40,000 people have fled the town, but UNMIS spokesman, Kouider Zerrouk, says that while they know thousands have left, the exact numbers are not clear:

"UN agencies with NGOs, are already initiating a plan to assess and to provide services to the humanitarian situation and to provide an assistance to those who have fled Abyei in the area of Agok, and the other areas next to it, and this will allow us to have a clear picture of the numbers of displaced people."
