Youth unemployment in Arab world is a major cause of unrest

The international Labor Organization says the unrest in North Africa and the Middle East is a byproduct of high unemployment there, especially amongst the younger generation.

The organization says the lack of true democracy is also a factor and these are things that must be addressed to help countries prevent a breakdown of society.

Jürgen Schwettmann, the ILO’s Deputy Regional Director for Africa says governments need to work with labor organizations and trade unions on job creation and social protection programs.

“We need to support reformed employers organizations in particular in Tunisia. You can organize national social dialogue to bring about a new spirit of social dialogue based on democratic institutions.”
