WFP suspends food aid in Southern Sudan

More than 240,000 people in Southern Sudan may not receive critical food rations next month after the World Food Programme (WFP) suspended operations in two areas of the region.

Derrick Mbatha reports.

“The World Food Programme says it has decided to suspend food distribution in two states of Southern Sudan because of direct attacks and rising violence in the region.

The agency suspended operations in seven of 11 counties in the state of Jonglei following the killing of a national staff member, Santino Pigga Alex Wani, last Friday.

Earlier, on 19 April, members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Lakes State commandeered a truck contracted to deliver 16 tons of aid for the WFP’s school feeding programme.

That prompted the agency to stop the distribution of food in that sate.
