Volatile situation in Abyei could endanger regional progress

Abyei remains a flashpoint that has the potential to further escalate tensions between Sudan and South Sudan according to Assistant Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations.

Atul Khare

Atul Khare says this could damage the relationship between the countries, which are trying to coexist since South Sudan decided in a referendum in January to become independent.

A referendum on whether Abyei wants to stay with the North or go with the South remains unresolved.

Khare told Security Council members that the situation could become explosive.

“The situation in Abyei has remained volatile throughout the reporting period. The continued failure of the parties to make progress towards resolving Abyei’s future status fuelled frustration and empowered hard-line elements within the Misseriya and the Ngok Dinka communities, and contributed to continued violence.”
