UN staff killed in Afghanistan attack

The United Nations mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) was attacked in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif on Friday leaving at least eight people dead.

UNAMA spokesman Dan McNorton says the head of the mission, Staffan de Mistura, is on his way to the city to personally deal with the situation on the ground.

“We can confirm that the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) operations centre in Mazar-i-Sharif, in northern Afghanistan has been attacked today following a demonstration. We can also confirm that there have been United Nations personnel deaths. The situation is still confusing and we are working to ascertain all the facts and take care of all our staff.”
