UN diplomatic efforts continue to resolve Libya crisis

Diplomatic efforts by the top United Nations envoy for Libya to resolve the crisis there are continuing.

Abdel-Elah Al Khatib concluded two days of talks in the North African country on Friday.

Mr. Al Khatib met with Libyan authorities in Tripoli and with opposition members of the Transitional National Council in Benghazi.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, told reporters in Nairobi, Kenya, that his envoy emphasized the need to immediately stop military action and all hostilities against the Libyan civilian population and to end the assaults on cities and towns.

“He stressed the need to respect the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people and secure safe access for humanitarian assistance in all cities and towns, in addition to allowing for the safe return of migrant workers. He called for the release of all foreign journalists, including the four members of an al-Jazeera television crew.”

The Secretary-General also said his envoy highlighted the need for all sides to abide by the principles of relevant international conventions regarding the treatment of civilians and prisoners of war.
