Two Croatian generals convicted of war crimes

Two Croatian generals have been convicted of war crimes committed by Croatian forces during the war against Serbs in 1995.

The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia in The Hague sentenced Ante Gotovina to 24 years and Mladen Markac to 18 years imprisonment.

The two men were convicted of commanding forces that carried out a policy of ethnic cleansing to expel thousands of Serbs from Croatia.

The tribunal acquitted Ivan Cermak of crimes against humanity and violations of the laws or customs of war.
