Tsunami warning exercise for Caribbean

Caribe Wave 2011

A tsunami drill was held in the Caribbean on March 23. The exercise was a way to ensure the region would be ready if disaster struck. 33 governments took part in what’s being called Caribe Wave 2011. While planning began before Japan’s 9.0 magnitude earthquake caused a tsunami , officials say that event only highlighted the need for more preparedness. The exercise was sponsored by UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission along with several other organizations. Julie Walker spoke with Lorna Inniss, who is based in Barbados and is the Chair of the Caribbean Tsunami and Coastal Hazards Warning System.
