UNAMA staff mourn those killed in Mazar-i-Sharif

A memorial service was held in Afghanistan in early April in honour of the United Nations staff members who were killed when angry protestors attacked the UN office in the northern part of the country. They were protesting the burning of the Koran by an obscure US pastor.

 Mine awareness saves lives

Thousands of adults and children are killed each year as a result of stepping on or playing with landmines. The International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action, April 4, reminded all that clearing land of these explosive remnants of war saves lives and protects livelihoods. I spoke with Takuto Kubo of the UN’s Mine Action Programme about international progress on banning landmines.
