Syrian city under siege

The people of Deraa city in Syria are living under siege-like conditions according to the head of political affairs at the United Nations Lynn Pascoe.

Briefing the Security Council on the situation in Syria, Mr. Pascoe said that anti-government demonstrations in Deraa and other cities and towns of Syria were continuing.

He told the Council that the reaction of Syrian authorities to the protests has been a combination of reforms and the use of force.

Mr. Pascoe painted a grim picture of the situation in Deraa City and surrounding villages where there are tanks and large numbers of soldiers.

“Reliable sources consistently reporting the use of artillery fire against unarmed civilians, door-to-door arrest campaigns, the shooting of medical personnel who attempt to aid the wounded, raids against hospitals, clinics and mosques and the purposeful destruction of medical supplies and arrests of medical personnel.”
